From Ethical Analysis to Policy Impact: What Makes Successful Ethics Advice?

Online event
How do we assess the success of ethics advice to policymakers? Is success measured by attaining policy change, being heard, enhancing public trust or something else?

Join SAEGE and INGSA-Europe for an interactive webinar exploring how to understand and achieve success in ethics advice.

Ethics researchers and advisory bodies are asked to advise policymakers on emerging technologies, public health, and environmental governance, among other ethical issues. Yet it is often unclear what constitutes successful ethics advice. While policy change is one possible indicator, ethics advice can also shape how issues are framed, improve the quality of decision-making, promote transparency and accountability, or foster public trust and democratic legitimacy.

Drawing on their experiences in national and international ethics councils, the panel speakers will discuss how ethics advisers can think strategically about impact, navigate complex political environments, and increase the relevance and effectiveness of their work.

Panellists:

  • Prof. Dirk Lanzerath, Managing Director at EUREC – European Network of Research Ethics Committees, and Coordinator of SAEGE.
  • Prof. Nils-Eric Sahlin, Vice-Chair of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies, and Professor of Medical Ethics at Lund University.
  • Prof. Margit Sutrop, Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Tartu, and member of the Estonian Parliament.
  • Prof. Behnam Taebi, Professor of Energy & Climate Ethics and Scientific Director of the Climate Safety & Security Center at Delft University of Technology.

This session will be moderated by Dr. Marija Antanavičiūtė, Senior Policy Advisor at SAEGE.
