About the European Group on Ethics

The European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE for short) is an independent expert group. It provides the European Commission with high-quality advice and policy recommendations on ethical questions posed by scientific and technological innovation.

The EGE reports to the President of the European Commission and advises the College of Commissioners as a whole. Its task is to integrate ethics into policymaking at international level as well as within the EU institutions.

Members of the Group

Members are chosen for their varied expertise in the fields of law, natural and social sciences, philosophy and ethics. This ensures an independent, interdisciplinary perspective.

Identification committee

Members are appointed by the President of the European Commission. The current Group was appointed by President von der Leyen on 26 January 2025.

The selection and appointment process is supported by an identification committee, whose role is to identify suitable candidates.
